Safe Sleep & Healthy Sleep Habits

Sleep can be one of the biggest adjustments for new parents. We provide practical guidance to help families establish healthy sleep habits while following safe sleep recommendations during the first year.

Safe Sleep Guidelines for Infants

  • Always place your baby on their back for sleep
  • Use a firm, flat mattress with a fitted sheet only
  • Share a room, not a bed, during infancy
  • Dress baby in lightweight clothing and consider a wearable sleep sack
  • Maintain a smoke-free environment

Understanding Newborn Sleep

  • Newborns typically sleep 14-17 hours each day
  • Sleep occurs in short stretches throughout the day and night
  • Day and night confusion is common at first
  • Active sleep often includes movement, sounds, and facial expressions

Building Healthy Sleep Habits

  • Watch for sleepy cues such as yawning, rubbing eyes, or fussiness
  • Put baby down drowsy but awake when possible
  • Establish a simple bedtime routine
  • Encourage daytime feeds and daytime interaction
  • Be patient as sleep patterns develop over time
